SERMON SUMMARY

  1. We are called to Generational Discipleship.
  2. Generational Discipleship centers on the gospel.
    1. “That which [Paul] has entrusted” to Timothy is the gospel.
    2. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
    3. Matthew 28:19-20
    4. What is the gospel?
      1. Content – Christ came into the world to save sinners
      2. Scope – Christ is reconciling all things to himself
      3. The gospel, then, is personal and social.
      4. It’s true, verifiable, essential, and urgent.
  3. Generational Discipleship is investment-minded.
    1. That word “entrust” means to deposit into with expectation of return.
    2. Investment, entrustment, deposit requires certain things:
      1. Trust, faith – in people, yes, but ultimately in God
      2. Risk – It could fail. (Demas)
      3. Vision – A future hope based on a present reality
    3. Investment is looking at return that you likely won’t see.
      1. Paul is looking 3 generations ahead.
      2. Paul is investing in Timothy for Timothy’s spiritual grandchildren.
  4. Generational Discipleship is replicable.
    1. If the things we present are going to be taught to our spiritual great- grandchildren and beyond they must be:
      1. Simple
      2. Practical
      3. Replicable
  5. Practical Methods for Generational Discipleship

APPLICATION / CHALLENGE

Prayerfully consider how you can invest in the next generation so that the gospel will advance and the church will thrive:

  • Our middle and high school leaders need small group leaders willing to take part in generational discipleship.
  • Our children’s ministries, both Triangle Kids and Awana, need volunteers who are ready to bring the love and joy of Christ into the lives of our smallest TCCers.

Let’s be doers of the Word, not just hearers! Get in The Game and serve with one of our next generation ministries.

TAKE ONE STEP

Each week, write down one doable concrete step of obedience, small or large  that you will put into practice this week. (James 1:22: “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.”)
