Paul addresses a group of false teachers who are seeking to take away the Philippians’ joy by undermining Paul’s authority by elevating their own. Paul compares his extensive resume to theirs, then shows such boasting in earthly credentials is less than worthless. Our true joy is only found in our saving knowledge of Christ!

Paul calls the church to a selfless, others-centered life. He holds up three individuals who demonstrated such a life and tells us how they demonstrated a life of humility.
In Sunday’s message, we see Paul draw upon the deep teaching of the incarnation as a solution to the divisions and infighting being experienced in the Church at Philippi. He calls the church to imitate Christ who refused to take advantage of his divine prerogatives and became a common servant to humanity.
How does the church achieve unity? In Sunday’s passage, Paul makes an impassioned appeal to imitate Christ in his humility. It is this humble mindset that makes Christian unity possible and so attractive.

Paul’s great affection for the Philippian church is evident in the early verses of this letter where he identifies Philippians believers as saints– those who have been set apart by God for his purposes. Because that designation brings with it the responsibility to live holy lives, we should live out of our identity and spiritual calling. Paul also calls us to maintain joy despite our circumstances because our joy is based upon a deep seated trust in God that he will work in and through our circumstances to bring about his purposes in our lives.
