Paul’s great affection for the Philippian church is evident in the early verses of this letter where he identifies Philippians believers as saints– those who have been set apart by God for his purposes. Because that designation brings with it the responsibility to live holy lives, we should live out of our identity and spiritual calling. Paul also calls us to maintain joy despite our circumstances because our joy is based upon a deep seated trust in God that he will work in and through our circumstances to bring about his purposes in our lives.
Though corrupted by the Fall, God’s icons will one day be perfected in His glory, sharing in the Divine nature through union with Jesus. They will be restored to honor, freed from sin, removed from suffering, and reunited with their soul-satisfying Creator, forever. Man’s eternal fate, therefore, is one of unimaginable joy in the presence of God, or unthinkable agony away from it.

In this portion of Mark’s Gospel, Jesus commends the giving of a poor widow and addresses his disciples misconceptions of the end times. Concerning giving, we learn that God is pleased with the sacrifice rather than the amount of the gift. With respect to the end times, Jesus addresses many non-signs of the end times that should not disturb us. These things will occur, but are not in themselves signs of Jesus’ second coming.
True greatness is not measured by how many people answer to you, but rather by your willingness to serve others–especially those whom our society devalues. In this passage, Jesus teaches us what true greatness looks like. It’s not what many people think!

Jesus conveys much more than we typically understand in this next passage from the Gospel of Mark. It is about a revolutionary doing a revolutionary act. It is about our understanding that God had called his people to do the impossible. It is about wholeness and brokenness. And it’s about laying down your life for the benefit of others.
