In response to my sermon this past week entitled, “Managing God’s Portfolio,” several people asked me about the meaning of Matthew 25:30 which speaks of the fate of the unfaithful servant. Verse 30 reads,
30“Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:30
That sounds like some pretty severe punishment, doesn’t it? The question I have been asked is this:
Pastor Doug, what is going on here? Is this imagery meant to represent the casting of this “worthless slave” into hell? You said that this passage has nothing to do with entry into heaven and hell, but rather the prospect of reward and responsibility in the future kingdom of God.” But what are we to make of the severe language employed in verse 30?
To answer this question, we need to carefully consider the broad Biblical context in which this passage is found.
